the tale of
Sable Mare Tales

When I started publishing excerpts of my own writing here, it occured to me--I could publish others' work, too! Why not? So I designed Sable Mare Tales to be the home for spec fiction writers who might like to share their stories online. The title came to me as a sort of twist on Dark Horse comics... Sable meaning black, Mare meaning, you know, horse. I began thinking up a short story to go along with the name, something to do with an ancient English village cursed and eventually withered away, nothing left of it save a quiet inn on a dead end road, a beaten place bearing the name Sable Mare Pub and Inn on its gently swinging sign... and within this quiet inn, which never houses a soul but occasionally serves a warm pint... tales are told of forgotten things, conspiracies left in the dust, and stories better kept unknown.
What Is Speculative
Fiction?

Great question--I like author Colin Neilson’s take…
“For purposes of this site, and the magazine sold here, I'm defining speculative fiction as dealing with stories that involve things that cannot happen at the time the story is written. This wide umbrella includes science fiction and fantasy, some horror fiction, cyberpunk, steampunk, magic realism and more.”
The only thing I’d change is…”stories that involve things that PROBABLY cannot happen…” Because therein lies the fun of the entire venture. Are their aliens living among us, disguised as people? No, probably not. But then again…who can prove it?

Catesbury.com is undergoing a transformation!
We now host an all-new section for speculative fiction by the most talented writers money can't buy! These exciting stories will be compiled into issues under
Sable Mare Tales .
Accepting submissions now!!
The aim is to eventually launch an independent Sable Mare site, followed by e-reader and print publication. One step at a time!
We're still celebrating the one year anniversary of Catesbury's launch with the thought-provoking short "sci-fi" story, Sin is Universal.
For those visiting for the first time--Catesbury.com was originally created to showcase short stories and novel extracts by author Matt Cates. It's now evolved to incorporate the high quality works of other authors writing in a similiar vein. As many spec fiction sites die out, and as the print market dwindles in our depressed economy, Catesbury is creating a new venue for voices which might otherwise not be heard.
There's also a smattering of visual art scattered about, which we also hope will expend to include the artwork of others, particularly those from the beautiful Pacific Northwest region.
The common theme we're going for here:
Stories based in reality, tinged with a little unearthly influence, generally in the form of: a hinted-at flying object, a disembodied spirit, a conspiracy or cult, or just an ol' fashioned case of Good versus demon-monsters from Hell. Think Twilight Zone in prose, and only slightly less weird...
Meanwhile...Matt is seeking a literary agent for his first novel, Veteran of Screaming Vengeance (formerly titled The Crimson Web ), while revising his exciting Young Adult fiction second novel, Dreambreaker.
